Description

A Chippendale Fan-Carved Walnut Claw-and-Ball Foot Dressing Table

Likely Philadelphia, Circa 1770

the top with notched fore-corners, the hardware, while seemingly of the period, is replaced.

Height 31 x width 36 1/4 x depth 20 inches.

This lot is located in Cincinnati.

Condition
Secondary wood:  white pineIn overall fine and stable condition. Retains an even finish and patina throughout, though likely an earlier refinish. Old scuffs, marks and scratches consistent with age and use. Few small visible age cracks to the case.  Hardware is replaced. The top drawer’s proper left runner is cracked, but all parts retained. Other runners are loose. The top secured with modern hardware and may be an early replacement as there are old holes to the top that do not align with the current case AND it appears that the front 1-inch of the top was added.  It is possible that the maker recycled a previously used board. There is a circular patch in the middle of the carved fan, from the inside of the drawer there is evidence of an old drop-pull, suggesting that perhaps the drawer face was later carved.
